Aftercare

Knowing more about your jewellery’s materials will influence how you care for your jewellery. Each material responds better to different treatments so we’ve included some tips below.

There are many external factors that influence the longevity of your jewellery, but the most important things to remember are:

• Try to avoid alcohol-based products, such as perfume, sunscreen and hairspray (jewellery should be the last thing you put on)

• Try to avoid swimming or showering whilst wearing your jewellery (saltwater, chlorine and fresh water damage precious materials and gemstones)

• Try to avoid contact with soapy water whilst wearing your jewellery (soap suds dull precious materials and gemstones, leaving a thin film)

Materials

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is an incredibly low maintenance material. If it becomes dirty, wash in warm soapy water and dry off with a soft cloth. The colour applied to the stainless steel is an industrial paint however if it becomes greasy use warm soapy water and a soft cloth to clean the surface.

Sterling Silver

If your jewellery is polished, use a silver cloth to clean the tarnish. If your piece has a heavily distressed finish, we suggest using a silver polish and soft toothbrush on the surface, washing the piece under warm water and wiping with a soft cloth afterward.

18ct Gold Plated Silver

Use a silver cloth to polish any build up of tarnish. This should be minimal due to the plating process. If your piece begins loose its plating and rub through to the silver, please get in touch with Heather to get your piece re-plated. Contact her at enquiries@heathermcdermott.co.uk

9ct Gold

To brighten any gold jewellery we suggest using warm soapy water. Place your piece in the warm soapy solution for 10-15 minutes and gently brush the piece with a soft toothbrush. Rinse this in a new bowl of clean warm water and wipe down with a soft cloth.
